Interrogative Pronouns

Interrogative pronouns are words such as who, whom, whose, what and which. These pronouns are used for asking questions.

The words who and whom are used to ask questions about people.

  • Who is your best friend?
  • Who is dad talking to?
  • Whom did the chairman criticize?

Note: You cannot use whom as the subject of a verb.

  • ü Who ate the apples?
  • û Whom ate the apples?

Use whose to ask which person something belongs to.

  • Whose book is this?
  • Whose are those shoes?

Use what to ask questions about things

  • What is your name?
  • What does he want?
  • What sports do you play?

Use which to ask someone to name a particular person or thing.

  • Which of your brothers is the tallest?
  • Which subject among the business stream is your favourite?
